October 20, 2019
"Okay, babe, calm down," Tracey says as Brennan checks the table then the clock then the windows for the millionth time. "They've got a young family, Bren. The kids are probably being ornery like Nyla and Nydia get sometimes. Besides, they're only a few minutes late and you said yourself how important this was to both of them."
At the window, Brennan sighs, leaning his forehead against the glass. "It's just not like Anthony. Ever since I met him, even before he came out to me when he was still Anastasia, he's always been on time."
"Maybe one of the kids got sick," Tracey suggests.
"We'd have gotten a text."
"Maybe neither of them have had time to send a text."
"It just doesn't feel right, Trace," Brennan sighs. Leaving the window at last, he heaves himself onto the sofa beside his husband. As Tracey takes Brennan's hand in his own, Brennan links their fingers and squeezes, as he often does when he gets nervous.
"You feeling okay today?" Tracey asks, watching how Brennan reacts.
Brennan sighs, heavier than the last one. "I don't know why I try to hide it still. You know me better than I know myself."
"What's up?" Tracey tries not to let his worry overcrowd Brennan. "Weird headspace again?"
"Yeah."
"I'm sorry, babe. How bad has it been today?"
Brennan shrugs. "Not as bad as it has been, thank god, but if I'm being completely honest, Anthony and Nathanael's visit has kinda been the thing that's kept me going all day."
"I know you've said before that sometimes Nyla and--"
"Not even the twins helped." Brennan's voice sounds quiet, weak, shaky. "I hate admitting that." He feels guilty. Another thing he hates admitting.
"Babe, I know you've been putting it off, but maybe it's time you start looking for a therapist here. I know you have a list you made up for Anthony. Surely someone from there could help you too," Tracey suggests. "I hate seeing you like this. And I know you hate the girls seeing you like this."
"I'll be fine," Brennan insists. "It's just the weather. It's gotten colder and drearier and wetter."
"You never liked the rain."
"Hated it. The clouds that come with it too," Brennan sighs. "But I know you and the girls and the older kids need me."
"It's more than just a need, Bren. You know that I love--"
Before Tracey can tack on that one last three letter word, Brennan's ears catch the sound of a car door slamming. Slipping away from Tracey, he peers out the window one last time as he watches Nathanael, Anthony, and their four kiddos exit their car. "Nyla, Nydia, guess who's here?" he calls.
The pounding of the twins' feet echoes through the house just as a knock sounds on the door. Brennan quickly kisses Tracey on the lips before scooping Nydia into his arms. "Get the older kids?" he suggests as another knock sounds on the door. "Coming!"
Anastasia-- or Anthony, the name he's started to use-- turns to Nathanael. "Thanks for agreeing to dinner with Bren and Tracey," he says for the millionth time that hour alone. "And for taking the initiative to set it up. That means a lot to me."

"Yeah. No problem. Just sorry my stupid wheelchair stopped in the middle of the living room. Told ya we needed to fix that carpet." Nathanael sighs. "Okay, the truth is I was grateful- a little- for that. I don't even quite know why I'm so nervous. I guess I'm kinda afraid my feelings aren't real, if that makes any sense. What I mean is- they're still so new. I kinda go back and forth between wanting things to stay the way they were- because I love you as Anastasia too, and that's how I knew you first- and knowing there's no other way forward because regardless we're still in love."
"Yeah," Therese pipes up, jumping from the van. "You are. That's all that matters, right?"
Nathanael smiles as he takes a minute to consider before moving the wheelchair up the ramp. "Maybe being an adult is overrated. We do tend to complicate things."

"Being an adult is definitely overrated," Anthony laughs then sighs, absently helping Nathanael up the incline of the ramp to the front of the house as has become habit since they first started dating. "But then again adulthood has brought us our marriage and the kids and it's brought me clarity and good friends and greater support so... maybe it's not all bad."
Upon arriving at the front door, Lucy knocks first.
"You excited to see Nyla and Nydia, girls?" Anthony asks the twins. "It's been awhile, hasn't it?"
Lucy nods, grinning. "You think they'll remember us?" she asks as her older brother rolls his eyes. "Shut up!"
"I didn't say anything!" Thaddeus whines.
"No, but you did make a stupid face!" Lucy mimics his expression. "And that's just as bad!"
"It's just stupid to ask that. Duh, they're gonna remember you. It's not like we've been gone forever," Thaddeus groans.
"Feels like it," Lucy mumbles.
"Therese, you wanna knock again?" Anthony interrupts the squabbling, hoping to distract from the argument. The bickering gives him a headache.

Therese knocks on the door. James, trying to solve the issue another way, loudly calls, "We're here!" Nathanael laughs. "If they haven't heard us by now, they never will!"
"Yeah, thanks James," Therese agrees. And you're right, Lucy, it has been a long time. I miss them too."
She gives Thaddeus a look as if to say 'Ha! Maybe you're not so smart.'
"And also maybe after the..." Therese still can't bring herself to say the awful word. "Maybe we'll get to come over more."

"I hope so," Anthony responds, pulling Therese in for a quick side hug.
Before anyone can open their mouths to say anything more, Brennan opens the door and Nyla rushes out to hug her friends. "Hi! Hi!" she greets them loudly as her sister wiggles out of their dad's arms to join them.
"Hey," Brennan says to Anthony, flashing him a relieved smile. "It's good to see you again. Everything okay?"
"He's been worrying again," Tracey chuckles, joining them at the door. "My little worry wart." Brennan starts to protest but Tracey cuts him off with a peck on the lips and an added, "I love you, worry wart."
"You just usually show up on time. Or at least text to let me know what's up," Brennan says, ignoring his husband's last comment.

"Wheelchair problems happen at the most inconvenient times. I told him we needed to fix that living room carpet awhile ago," says Nathanael. "That and nerves. Not for seeing you guys. For the...situation," he clarifies. He doesn't think they know yet, at least not if Anthony hasn't told them anything. Which reminds him... "How much do you guys know?"
James and Therese hug Nyla and Nydia. "What you wanna play?" asks Therese. She'd rather forget the whole situation entirely- for awhile.

Brennan glances at Tracey. "I, umm, I've basically been there since the start," he replies. "I helped him fimd resources and understand things better. And I understand he recently told you. We've sort of been in contact. Anthony told me when he planned to tell you and then when he planned to tell the kids, but I haven't really gotten a chance to reconnect since."
"On that note, why don't you guys come in?" Tracey invites. "Dinner is in the crockpot whenever you want to sit down to eat and the older kids are all excited to meet you guys in a greater capacity. Bren made sure that they and the house were all as spotless as possible."
"I wanted to make a good impression on Nathanael since we haven't really gotten to know each other," Brennan protests.
Tracey sighs, "Babe, there's no need to impress every single person who steps into your life. I'm sure Nathanael will be fine with the house and the--"
"You gotta see our room!" Nyla squeals, dragging Therese by the hand as Nydia takes Lucy's. The four girls rush between Brennan's and Tracey's legs and into the house.
"--and there go the girls," Tracey finishes with a chuckle. "Come on." Tracey turns to lead the two adults and the boys inside. "Clearly the girls aren't too worried dinner. The living room's this way."
"Been, wait," Anthony calls. He points to the lip at the front doorway.
Brennan glsnces from the door to Nathanael. "Oh god. I'm so sorry. Clearly our house isn't built with accessibility issues particularly in mind. You need help with that?"

"Uh, yeah, thanks." Nathanael says. "And about this...I didn't exactly mean...that. I mean, I knew you knew that much." Nathanael stays silent until they get to the living room. His stomach is churning way too much to think about dinner.
"See, here's the thing. We've both decided we're still in love. And that's where it got a bit...odd. For me, I mean. Because until she...he...told me, I didn't realize I was...I mean, y'know, he's the only one I'd...switch teams, I think they call it? Yeah. For anybody else...no way. But it's weird- because like I said...I just, boom...decided. And I wasn't, y'know, raised to accept it. My sister, the one Therese is named after, she can't even tell our family her own issue. She's bi. It's still so new I feel a little like my brain belongs to someone else. Anthony said he understands and we'll just be crazy together."
Meanwhile, Therese runs to keep up with Nyla. "What did you pick? Frozen? Little Mermaid? Beauty and the Beast? Something else?"

Brennan tag teaming with Anthony, in a few moments they have Nathanael in the house. "Well, I know that must have come as a surprise to Anthony. He was so worried about how you'd respond. I even helped him fogure out a plan for what he thought would be the inevitable. I'm glad it isn't for your sakes. It's a near impossible situation to figure out."
Leading them into the living room, Brennan takes a seat next to Tracey. "They decided to stay together," he says softly.
Tracey raises an eyebrow. "Didn't you tell me they both come from conservative families? How's that going to work?"
Nyla pushes open the bedroom door to show off the newly completed decor. "Nydia chose it," she says, flopping onto the bed. She holds up a stuffie from her bed. "It's Coco themed! I wanted to do something different but she really really wanted to do it this way."
Nydia shrugs, hiding her face behind her pillow. "I like that movie better."

"Oh my god, that's actually really sweet," Brennan croons.
Tracey glances at his husband, chuckling at the goofy look on the other man's face. "You always have been a bit of a romantic, haven't you, Bren?" Instead of responding, Brennan leans up and kisses Tracey. "Good on you, though. It's hard to just say screw it and forget about what everyone else thinks. Trust me when I say I know that firsthand. Conservative families can be hard to come from when you're... anything but your average cisgender straight dude."
"Daddy says that we're Mexican just like they are," Nydia says.
"Yeah, it's why you like it so much," Nyla chimes in with a giggle.
"It's not like we know our mommy..."
Nyla rolls her eyes. "Pops says that doesn't matter. We got him and daddy and that's all we need."
((Pops is Tracey and dad/daddy is Brennan just for your reference. lol))

"Yeah, that's gotta be hard. Of course, like I said...I thought that way too, till just now. It's not like I hated LGBTQ, liked it when people bullied them, or denied their right to exist- and all that entails. Otherwise we wouldn't be friends. But being nice and agreeing with someone aren't the same. Not that I'm saying you have to agree on everything to be friends, or even to be civil- but it's easier. That's another reason why I feel I switched brains with someone else. And telling the kids was hard, because it basically went against almost everything we'd taught them, too. The religious stuff especially, but a little bit of the scientific stuff too. How was I to know there so many orientations and about gender fluidity and stuff? Not to mention, I don't know how this divorce thing is actually going to be feasible for the time we have to. I need help- like with driving and stuff, and chair transfers when I get in and out of bed- and I'm certainly not going to ask Claudia or Fatima or Rafe- though Therese Bernadette could- and Salome is in a wheelchair, too." He sighs. "Truth be told, I don't know how he fell for me like I did for him, or how he's put up with the stupid thing all these years. It can be draining on a family. But I am grateful."
(OOC: Also, you might mention how Anastasia/Anthony had reacted in high school when learning he'd been in an accident serious enough to kill his parents and put him and Salome in wheelchairs. The accident would have been before they moved to BG.)
Therese nods. "That's cool. Some kids at school are too, but they're older than us. Acacia, Matteo, and Stefano Parker. Their mom is. And I see them at church, too." Therese sighs, knowing she will moss going to church.

"Nate, you know I've offered to help as much as possible," Anthony chimes in. "And I'll take the kids to the apartment with me any time you need. You know this. And you know I've never really cared about the chair. It's always been who you are as a person that mattered most. You've always been so kind and loving and I was so scared that you weren't going to make it when I heard about the accident. If I have to keep reminding you of all this, I will but I don't want to bore our hosts," Anthony replies.
"No, no, it isn't boring," Brennan protests.
"Personally, I think this all says a lot about why you two are wanting so hard to work through this. Looks have never defined the relationship, Anthony said so himself," Tracey adds.
Lucy rolls her eyes. "Why are you sighing, Therese?" she groans.

"Thanks. You might have to remind me again and again...I worry about those things. There are so many things I have to consider as myself, you know? I'd be worried about it no matter who I married or divorced." He smiles ironically. "And thanks for listening- to all of it- to you guys, too. Now you see why I want this so much, right? And why I feel like a nutcase. See, you were right, talking to them helped." Nathanael smiles at Anthony.
Therese sighs again, but this time it is in frustration. "I forgot." She forgets that they're supposed to be forgetting all this divorce stuff- for now. "Never mind." She knows she and Lucy will probably talk later. "Anyway, yeah, there are lots of people in church who are...what's that word? It starts with H. Um...we should have tacos sometime. And I like your room. You should come see ours sometime. It's finally done!"

"I told you," Anthony snickers, bumping shoulders playfully with Nathanael. "I know you haven't gotten the chance to spend much time around them, but I hope you'll choose to get to know them better now that we're in the thick of all this. Honestly if I hadn't met Bren here, it would have taken me a lot more unhappy years to figure out what's really been going on with me. It's because of him--"
"Don't go giving me all the credit," Brennan interrupts. "I just pointed you to a possibility and a support group that would help you understand things better. I think the group did three or four times what I did."
"Wouldn't have found the group without you though, Bren," Anthony insists. "Wouldn't have even considered that maybe the reason I've always felt uncomfortable in my body was because of this if you hadn't taken the time to listen to me blabber on and on about what I was feeling. Especially because I was pregnant at the time. I love my kids, I do, but pregnancy was always the hardest time for me."
"Ooh, I love tacos!" Nyla says with a grin.
Pulling the pillow from her face, Nydia stares at the other two gitls. "What's your room like?" she asks softly.
"What color is it?" Nyla adds. "Do you guys have a theme too? Like your last room? That one was a lotta fun!"

"It would be an honor to get to know the man who's clearly been so good to one of the best friends I could ask for," Brennan says, smiling at Nathanael. "Anthony is lucky to have fallen for you."
Anthony turns to smile at Nathanael. "Yeah. I think I am. It's not every day that you find a guy as great as my husband is."
"It's kinda hard to describe but Mommy and--" Lucy stops herself. "Sorry. Daddy and..." She frowns, her brow furrowed. "We still haven't figured this whole thing out."
"We call ours dad and pops," Nyla reminds her friend. "Maybe you could do something like that."
"Yeah... I guess... But anyway, they helped us do this thing where we have, like, a chalkboard wall on one wall and the others are covered in pictures of the stuff we like. One wall is Therese's, one's mine, and the other one is, like, mostly just solid because that's the wall with the windows and the one we have our beds up against."

"Not many people- period- as good as mine, either. After he heard about the accident, it seems like Salome and I, whichever one of us wasn't sleeping, heard from him at least twice a week. You don't do that for just anybody. People tend to stay away from what they don't understand, you know?"
"The chalkboard wall is neat," adds Therese. "We write messages, or the daddies write chores on it, or we draw."

"Takes a very special person indeed to do that. Sounds like Anthony here has always cared about you," Tracey comments. "I know Bren has gotten me out of some sticky situations too. Sign of a good man and a good love if you ask me."
"If you don't mind my asking," Brennan starts, "how old were you when the accident happened?"
"It's a lotta fun!" Lucy giggles.
"You guys should make up a secret language or like a code so you can write messages that your parents and brothers can't read!" Nyla suggests enthusiastically. "That way you can tell each other things without them knowing!"

"I was 16 and Salome was 15. It was another 2 years before my Uncle Elliott moved us- all six of us cousins- here. The others moved across the country, though Claudia and Salome keep in touch most often. Our family were also friends with Pria Jewell's family. Pria is the editor for the paper here. Anyway, it wasn't just us- Claudia and Fatima lost their mom, too. If people wouldn't be in such a hurry to get through traffic jams-" He stops and sighs. "What else would you like to know? I work with the news crew here as a cameraman."
"We should!" Therese giggles. "I don't know how it stays secret if you two know about it, though. Let's all use it between the four of us!"

"Yeah, Anthony mentioned you were involved with the news," Brennan replies.
"Honestly," Tracey speaks up, "I think it's interesting that they hired you. It can't be easy to find work, especially as a cameraman, since you use the chair. I mean, sure, there are equal opportunity laws, but that doesn't mean they have to hire the diverse applicants."
"I'm afraid it'll only get harder after everything with me," Anthony sighs. "Because then not only will you be a man in a wheelchair, but you'll be in a same sex relationship with a transgender man."
"It definitely won't get easier," Brennan agrees softly.
Nydia's eyes light up. "Yeah! And then we could, like, write notes at school--"
"Or other places!" Nyla adds.
Frowning, Nydia asks, "Like where?"
"Like... The store! Or... The park!"
"What would that do?" Lucy asks with a laugh and a smirk. "You'd have to tell us where to find it and then we'd have to have mo--" Lucy pauses and corrects herself. "One of our dads take us there and--"
"We could send letters?" Nyla suggests.

Nathanael nods. "If I'm fired, I'm most likely screwed, and I know it. But...there's gotta be something, you know? Remote work isn't that hard. Neither is doing vlogs."
"Yeah, we should send letters," Therese agrees. "I mean it's not like at school we can talk about-" She says. "Not yet. And who else would get it?" She knows Lucy might wonder that, too. "And other things. When we're older- whenever that is," she adds, rolling her eyes. "People say it has to do with walking somewhere by ourselves, or driving. But then might be fun. We'd say, "Note under the rock at the big tree in the park. And we'd know."

"Well, unless they give you a different reason, you could sue them for discrimination if they fire you for that," Tracey says. "Firing somebody because of the relationship they're in is wrong. It would be the lawsuit of the year."
"I'm pretty sure companies like that, companies who are in the public eye, know that," Brennan assures Nathanael. "I mean, they're the media. They've probabaly reported on lawsuits like that themselves before."
Lucy purses her lips and furrows her brow as she pauses to think. She imagines it would not be a very common experience for kids their age and sometimes she gets tired of talking about things with her sister. Therese has a very specific point of view on things, or so Lucy thinks, and talking things over with her would end up in the same conversation on repeat.
"Deal," she says after a moment.
Nyla's eyes light up as Nydia giggles and claps her hands. "Yay!" Nyla cheers, running to hug her friends. "So should we get started on making this code?"

Nathanael chuckles. "You're right- I do occasionally see those reports. And I don't know- maybe I'm blowing it out of proportion. A little. Just like I did with not knowing how to handle the divorce as someone differently abled. I do tend to do that, sometimes."
"How do we make one? I know some Pig Latin, utbay owhay oday eway akemay ithay ifferentday?" Therese giggles as she finishes the sentence.

"It's a lot to process," Tracey agrees. "Go easy on yourself. It's okay to overthink things at first as long as you give yourself to actually think things through afterwards. You don't have to have all the answers right away."
Brennan chuckles, shaking his head. "Tracey is a master at handling overthinkers thanks to me."
"I tell him the same thing every time I catch him in the middle of overthinking things."
"So multiple times a day?" Anthony snickers.
"Hey! That's not fair!" Brennan laughs. "But, yeah, pretty much. I have gone a day or two without it but--"
"Babe, you and I both know those days are fewer and further between than either of us would like," Tracey says softly.
Brennan pauses, momentarily speechless. "I mean... Yeah. But I'm trying." He turns to Nathanael and stresses, "And that's what really matters."
"Ummm... We could do different little pictures for the different letters?" Nyla suggests as Nydia grabs a piece of paper from their craft stash. "So A could be a... a..."
"A circle?" Nydia fills in.
Lucy begins to grin. "We could do A an empty circle and then E, I, O, and U colored in differently!"

"Trying can be hard work, too. It wasn't easy to learn to walk again- on my good days- with braces. Sometimes it's still hard. But I wouldn't be as proud of myself if I hadn't done it, you know?" Nathanael agrees.
"And letters like M and W and N and Z could be a heart right side up and a heart upside down!" adds Therese, getting the hang of it.
James, who doesn't really understand what the girls are doing even though he's vaguely interested, wanders into the living room and crawls into Anthony's lap.
Nathanael laughs. "Looks like we've been interrupted. What were the girls doing that was so neat?" he asks James.
"Umm...I don't know. But it's about letters and shapes." He can't read quite yet, other than his own name and his family's names, so he doesn't understand the letters. "I'm hungry."

Brennan leans forward, motioning for the boy to to lean in closer. "Can I tell you a secret, James?" he whispers. "So am I. And I bet Murphy and Ronan are too."
Tracey can't help but chuckle at that. "Those boys are always hungry. Just another thing to look forward to when your boys get older. Nothing you feed them will be enough to fill the blackholes they apparently have as stomachs."
"Oh, come on, pops!" Ronan groans. "Are we really that bad?"
"Okay, maybe not you anymore, Ro, but Murph here..." Tracey claps a hand on the young man's shoulder. "I fear we may be accidentally starving him because he can't ever seem to get enough." At that exact moment, Murphy's stomach lets out an ungodly sound.
Brennan and Tracey both start to laugh. "I think that's our cue to start dinner. Di, you wanna go grab the younger girls?" Brennan asks. At his request, Diana pops off the couch and clambers up the stairs. Standing, Brennan continues, "Come on. We can get settled and seated while she grabs the younger ones."
Following Brennan into the dining room, Anthony slips one hand into Nathanael's, the other occupied with James resting on his hip. "You good?" he checks in with Nathanael.
Nyla glances up when she hears a knock on the door. "Come in!" she yells, madly scribbling the ideas she, her sister, and the other set of twins have brainstormed for their coded language.
Diana flings the door open, it freaking as it hits the wall. "Dinner tine," she says before turning on her heel and heading back downstairs.
Nyla glances at her sister, grinning. "Yummy! Daddy's made dinner tonight and his cooking is waaaaaaaay better than pops's cooking ever is," she calls as she races out the door.

James giggles. He is glad he's not the only one hungry, but also, stomach noises are funny.
Nathanael is a bit confused. Good with what? "I think so. At the very least, all my secrets are out. I think you know how hard it is for me to tell people. Heck, I had problems explaining everything with my accident to the kids. It feels good to have someone try to get that. And now someone else gets why this is still so new and confusing." Until now, Nathanael thought he knew everything about himself. What if there are other things just as shocking he hasn't yet realized?
Therese giggles. "I won't tell him you said that, Nyla."
When everyone is settled in for dinner...

Tracey starts passing the food around the table, each of his older kids dishing themselves out. Diana helps Nyla and Nydia before passing it to Nathanael. Brennan goes around the table filling everyone's water glasses before sitting next to Tracey.
"Okay," Brennan says, "just so you know, we've got crockpot chicken pot pie. It's sort of like soup or stew. You dish it up and use the biscuits as the 'crust.' We've also got some other veggies and mashed potatoes for you guys to enjoy. It's one of the kids' favorite meals."
"And one of your favorites to make," Tracey adds.
"It's easy. It's tasty. I can keep up with Nyla and Nydia during the day while it cooks. There's a lot of pros to making meals in the crockpot," Brennan replies.
