November 9, 2011, about 8 AM
Nell wakes up the morning after her due date not feeling well. She thinks she is in labor, but at first she is hesitant to wake Joash. They've got time, if her labor with Andie is any indication. Thankfully, although there is a risk regardless, she doesn't have placenta previa this time- that had almost killed her with Andie. This time, though, her doctor isn't drunk.
But what is this?
Suddenly, without much warning, her water breaks as she finally sits up in bed. The contractions intensify, without much time in between. She's starting to have a hard time breathing through them.
"Joash! Andie! It's time!" Nell says, while she can still speak.
Andie had been going to watch the younger ones, so at first she isn't too concerned, but she knocks on the door anyway.
"Mom?" Andie is worried, remembering what her mother told her about her own birth.
"No, no, not that. But I don't think I'm going to...aaah!" Nell screams in surprise. This isn't supposed to be happening yet! They're supposed to have time!
When the contraction is over, Nell is sweating, but she can already feel another one coming. "Andie...911...now. Joash, stay with me." Nell reaches for Joash's hand, even though she's unsure if he's quite awake. "No... no wait...call Theo and... " She gasps again. "...tell him to bring Celine. In case."
Nell knows she doesn't have to explain what "in case" means. She's doubtful she will die, but at the same time, she's never quite felt pain like this- even with having Andie.

Nell is not sure what they are going to do if 911 doesn't make it in time. She is in so much pain she is starting to breathe through her teeth. "This isn't supposed to happen! What do we do?"

Nell relaxes for the moment after the next contraction ends. She knows it won't be long until the next one, but she is grateful for a tiny break to be clearheaded enough to be able to listen. "Good. Which one? I don't remember you telling me that."

Theo and Celine arrive before the medics do. Theo is proud of how quickly he gets his wife out of the car and into the house. "How can we help?" he asks.

"Just...stay with me.I almost died with Andie." Nell says, not long before a contraction takes her breath again. Celine thinks about how different her life would have been if she had never seen Nell again. Due to Nell trying to heal her own emotional pain, Andie had been conceived a year after Celine had left her bio family, and Nell's placenta previa had been noticed late in that pregnancy due to a drunk doctor. Tears prick Celine's eyes at the thought of Nell being gone, but she remains calm. "Shhh... don't think about that." Though she isn't quite close enough to take her sister's hand, she tries to keep her voice soothing. "It'll work out. No matter what." Nell's faith in God is strong, and Celine knows this. Nell knows what Celine means and nods. "I love you guys." After she has made it through another contraction, she looks from Joash to Theo nervously. "Towels." She squeezes Joash's hand again. Celine knows what that means. The baby may already be coming.
Then Nell gasps out another word. "Andie." "Well, there's how we can help," Celine says to Theo. "Poor kid! Andie is probably scared to death. And with five kids to watch. Who knows how she's coping?" She prays the medics are here soon. And just as she has the thought, a siren whizzes up and she hears doors opening. "Thank God," Celine breathes. Nell whispers in Joash's ear. "I have to push, I think."
Meanwhile, Andie is in the family room, trying to comfort her siblings, while her own heart is still beating erratically. She is nowhere near as calm as she probably appears to them. Knowing what she knows about her own birth story makes her fear for her mother, but she's had much better monitoring this pregnancy, and somewhere in the back of Andie's mind, she knows this. Maybe she'd feel better if she hadn't actually heard her mom's moans of pain. Yes, that must be it. For the first time in her life, Andie understands what the phrase blood-curdling scream means. That would probably rattle anybody. With a last shudder, she takes deep breaths to calm herself and has more or less succeeded when she hears the medics pull up.

More sirens and whirring of cars pulling in the driveway can be heard as the fire trucks and police likely also arrive. By this time, Nell is already pushing and it's not advisable to move her. She knows only the first few people who arrive will be able to fit in her bedroom.
"I should go," Celine realizes. But she feels some hesitation. She realizes her chair will be in the way soon, which is why she has suggested she leave, but she can't ignore the way Nell looks at her, her eyes pleading for Celine to stay. And Celine doesn't think she can live with herself if she leaves and then something bad happens. She keeps out of the way, moving her chair as much as possible to make room for more people, but she is still close. Nell can't talk at the moment, but she gives her sister a look.
"She's trying to tell me everyone will understand, right?" Celine asks Joash.
In the living room, Andie is alarmed again by how fast everything went, and how quickly people are rushing to the bedroom, though she tries to hide it for the kids' sake.

Theo suggests transferring Celine to the bed. He removes her chair to the living room where the kids are waiting. "Hey!" he comforts them. "Why the long faces? Everything is fine! Moms are supposed to sound like that." He laughs as another moan comes from the bedroom.
