"Yeah, probably not," Jeremy laughs. "Do you want to finish that now or just forget about it?"

She grins. "Let's finish...I'll be ravenously hungry, but hey, that's what it's for! Truth be told, though, I'm surprised my stomach noticed- sometimes I can't eat at all when I've been fighting."

Jeremy kisses her lightly before pulling her gently back into the kitchen. "Do we have enough ingredients to double what we were originally going to make?" he asks. "I'm more the opposite. When I find myself in sticky situations, I temd to get hungrier."

She checks carefully before answering. "Yeah, I think we do. Besides, food is a great way to make up after a fight...an olive branch, if you will. Or so I've heard." She kisses him again before sprinkling the counter with flour and starting on the dough.

"I can definitely attest to that," Jeremy laughs. "Most of the arguments I've had with girlfriends past ended in some sort of food. Pizza is a good go to for that."
Standing back, he watches her for a moment. Something in the simple domesticity of her actions is... he can't quite find the right word for it. Charming perhaps. He resists the urge to kiss her, afraid to distract her from the important business at hand. He knows his stomach will thank him later.
"So," he finally says, "how can I help? Even though I've had a lot of pizza in my time, I've never made it myself."

Graciela has no idea of the thoughts going through Jeremy's head. This might be a good thing, as she is a little self-conscious sometimes about being so old-fashioned as to actually like cooking- in the days of online-order meal kits, no less- even though she's nowhere near as good as Claire, Carmen, and Dawn have been.
Graciela thinks. "Truth be told, I didn't learn to make pizza myself until after I came here to be adopted. It's not generally a thing in Mexico. We don't eat a lot of wheat flour there. But...hmm.. why don't you try mixing the herbs and spices into the sauce? You're probably better at knowing what should go in a pizza crust. Garlic? Oregano? Bay leaves? Red pepper? I don't know!"

Jeremy shrugs. "Babe, I'm just as clueless as you are!" he laughs. "I have zero experience in the kitchen. I don't know one spice from another. Maybe we should Google it. I betcha there's about a million opinions there as to what belongs and what doesn't."

She laughs. "I bet you're right. but seriously, I'll never be my sister Claire- the baker- so don't ever expect that."

"I will keep my expectations average, I promise," Jeremy laughs as he grabs his phone. A moment passes before he says, "Well, the internet is pretty inconclusive as to what spices to use. It's basically just whatever you want."

Jeremy gives the page a quick glance. "Okay. This one seems easy enough," he says, grabbing the herbs listed in the article. "How's the rest of it coming along?"

"Pretty good. Most of the toppings are easy to put on," she says as she slices peppers and opens the can of olives. "But I'm just not good at stuff like making sauces. So thanks."

"Well, I'm trying at least," Jeremy laughs. "Hopefully it turns out okay. I definitely need to brush up on my skills in the kitchen if I want to be living on my own."

"Yeah...same here, if I want the other two siblings who live with me to continue doing so. Jeremiah's liable to run away so he doesn't starve to death!"

Jeremy laughs, "Maybe that's another thing we could learn together. We clearly could both use it."

"That's true. By the time I go back to college, we could both be pro chefs. Or more likely, I'll at least be able to cook things for Eliza when she comes over to my dorm. Speaking of which, we should probably start with something simple, like maybe a party food. What about fondue?"

"Fondue would be fun," Jeremy replies. "Do we have any special occasions coming up that we could make it for? Fondue feels fancier than your everyday party "

"Hmmm, well, don't people usually start planning Thanksgiving menus early? Or so one would hope." She chuckles.

"Fondue for Thanksgiving... I wouldn't have thought of that, but that would be the perfect opportunity to try something out," Jeremy agrees.

"And in the meantime- as practice- we could make it for ourselves, for a date night." She grins. "I've missed you, by the way. I've missed you so much."

"I've missed you too," he whispers, pulling her away from the pizza for a moment to hug her tightly. "I promise I'll try to find a new job soon so that I can go back to dating you properly. Hopefully I'll find one that won't suck the life outta me."

"I hope you do, too," she says, "But in the meantime, things like this are fun, and I've missed you so much I don't care what we do as long as we do something." Her hands still have some flour on them, but she doesn't care, burying her face against him for a minute and sighing happily.

"I'm sorry I've been absent," he mumbles into the top of her head. "I told myself I'd be a good boyfriend and treat you the way you deserve but I've been so busy with work or sleeping because work drained me that I haven't really been there for you."

"Hey, I've had stuff taking up my time, too. Celine's baby for one, and binge-watching sci-fi for another. I mean, until a little after the first of the year, I can do as I please- I mean, to relax and have a life. I've never given myself any time off before. And- well, you know all the stresses I face at school. At least now if an objectifying creep hits on me, I can legitimately say I have a boyfriend."

"And you can always call if you need help facing off against one of those jerks. I may not be able to come personally, but I can always send Eliza," Jeremy jokes. "Honestly, she'd probably be the smarter choice in that situation anyway."

Graciela laughs. "After what happened with Fred, I'll say you're right. I'd still tell you though. I hope you know that. Sometimes it can be really hard as a single girl, in a mostly male profession. And hitting on people should never happen regardless. But it does."

"Yeah, well, if that's the only thing I do to help, it'll still be at least somewhat worth it," he says with a joking chuckle. "Though i hope I do more than just protect you from harassment."

"Of course you will. I don't know what yet... but you will. Heck, there's already so much I've told you that I've never told anyone outside of my family. And there have to be things related to those things that I'll go through. You don't have a sibling murdered or go through foster care or anything like that and just forget it, you know?"
|
|
|
Post by starletinwaiting on Nov 26, 2019 17:50:32 GMT -8
"I feel ya on the foster care," Jeremy sighs. "Not everyone understands that bit. Maybe that's why we're meant for each other because we both do."

Graciela's head comes up in surprise. She gasps. "You think we're meant for each other?" She hopes so, but so many things could go wrong, and in her life, the things that have gone wrong have been major. That's why she hasn't said she loves him yet. But if things keep going this way, it won't be long in coming.
