The above linked thread says that he had been hired specifically to kill DAWN, but I forget why. Perhaps he was a friend of Aurora's absentee father? That's one idea.Anyone else have any?
And will he get out of jail and strike someone else? Hmmmm.....

Regardless, 8 years of a cold case is a long time! (Not as long as many cases, but still.)

I'm totally into murder stories. I listen to all kinds of podcasts. I don't have any police officers but my kids could be up and coming I guess. Maybe they can be "armchair sleuths".

Hahaha, that'd be fun. I guess first though, that I'm not sure what the real reason Dawn was picked specifically would be. Unless that person knew Aurora's absentee father. Any other ideas?

What is Dawn's backstory?

Her parents ran a meth lab and the only reason she was found and put in foster care is that she missed a lot of school and the truant officer came to her house. (she was 14 then) Dealing with all this was rough, and she acted out with vandalism and underage drinking before finally getting pregnant with Aurora and cleaning up her act. The father was absentee and may or may not have known he had a child, but shortly before Aurora was born, Dawn's adoption was finalized. With her bio parents (William & Yvonne Archer) being in a drug ring, there are probably a lot of ways this could go.

Was she shot? Stabbed? Did you write the murder scene?

Could you create a spinoff storyline under the past where she witnesses something? Or maybe someone was taking revenge against her bio parents who come back.

Maybe both at once. A ridiculous amount of money changing hands? The death of someone important in the meth ring who may have been poisoned by her bio parents?

What if her bio parents were trying to clean up their acts (or one of them was) and were blackmailed by someone? Dawn was taken away from them so maybe that prompted them to want to get better. Maybe a "colleague" relied on them to make meth and when they wanted to give it up they were giving up lots of money. Either that bad guys says "keep making meth or I'll kill your daughter" or the parents start working with law enforcement and give the bad guy up so he puts a hit on Dawn?
The witness thing would be unrelated, I think, because she has been away from her parents for several years, right? In that case it would be something completely different, like her stumbling upon an attack or something.
I don't really know what you were doing with Dawn, so I'm not sure what applies.

Ooooh, the first few would definitely work. It's probably this combination:
William (dad) was realizing that Dawn was 14 and might get into some trouble she might need her dad around for. Some guys start getting especially protective when their daughters start dating. I think Dawn met a guy- maybe the son of one of the leaders- and liked him.
So William is going to try to clean up his act, because he realizes he's been inattentive as a dad. Meanwhile, Yvonne (mom) is still making meth, but more on the side and sparingly to sort of work with law enforcement to put up the guy who's threatened Dawn while also keeping the guy off her back. She makes enough meth to keep him off her back while also not letting the law enforcement see. Then if they find it she can tell the police that he was still threatening Dawn's life and at least get a lighter sentence.
But Dad can't be around all the time, so Dawn is missing a lot of school, but not quite enough to fail a grade. One day the truant officer comes to their door while Mom is out delivering her meth. He's prepared to be firm, but Dawn confesses everything and he ends up reporting it to the police and taking Dawn with him.
So Yvonne comes back to the apartment after delivering the meth, but then sees that Dawn is gone. A week or so passes without her returning. (Sometimes Dawn will escape with a friend for a few days' vacation from their lives, and they know it's hard on her, so her parents aren't immediately worried.) By the time it gets into the second week, they know something must have happened, though, so they go to the ringleaders. It wasn't them, and Yvonne is still making meth, so they don't suspect her. But a fourteen year old presumably could only take that kind of life for so long, so the ringleaders suspect it was Dawn, they just don't know why. The ringleaders might be willing to cut Dawn a little slack at first (considering that she could have easily told a friend, but then the police show up and arrest everyone but William, who has truly cleaned up his act.
One of the officers, in sympathy, has a whispered conversation with William to tell him basically that Dawn is safe, and the parents are willing to give her up out of love so that she will have a better life.
But someone else is watching, maybe an informant/drug deliverer, who heard snippets of the conversation between Dawn and the truant officer as he passed by to take his laundry to the laundromat. (Dawn and her family probably share an apartment with someone else in the ring.) So this informant knows that Dawn told someone a little closer to law enforcement than her friends would probably be. He may not realize it wasn't exactly her fault and thinks she called the truant officer on purpose rather than him just showing up. (I know that IRL I got one of the truancy letters for missing ten days of school in one grading period due to being sick (we had a state test every grading period in 4th grade and the stress got to my body) and also having multiple doctors' appointments due to the cerebral palsy, like leg brace checks and etc. But between the stress of the repeated state testing and the doctor's appointments which made me miss more school than I would have liked as I loved my talented and gifted class, I basically had the crap scared out of me! I can't imagine having a truant officer actually show up at your house, and the stress it would cause you, but I have heard of them doing it.)
The Andrieuxes probably still lived in Chicago (where they adopted Celine), and thare's only a year between Celine and Dawn. Celine's accident would have been in March, 2000 (second or third week. I can't remember but will recheck the dates of the stock market crash), so the story in the past is probably shortly before that, in February or so.
Anyone want to get in on this past thread? I'll need a truant officer, the police, at least one if not two drug ringleaders present, and an informant, if I play the parents and Dawn.

Oooh, what if someone saw Aurora on FB or Instagram and tried to go after her too? They wouldn't succeed, but they might come close. Not sure how that would play out at the moment, but it's an idea.

Any ideas on how we could start off solving the murder, and who hired the murderer to kill Dawn? The only thing I can think of is that the guy at the top probably relegated the hiring to an underling in order to not be caught.

Anybody want to create a temporary character- a semi-famous drug lord who could have been in charge of the ring Dawn's parents were in who hired the murderer?

Possibly searching whatever DNA was found on an ancestry website, then finding relatives? A relative might even know who the murderer worked for who might have ordered the killing since it was in a drug ring.

Also wondering if I should involve Celine somehow since she's the other one from Chicago (like Dawn) but how? Maybe someone thinks she knew something she didn't (and tipped off the police). Kidnapping is probably out of the question due to her wheelchair, but a hostage situation or stalking might not be. (easier but still would involve the police, traumatizing, confusing, etc.) It's also possible that they'd have to call in other police departments since this involves a previous drug ring, and maybe one of the people who rescues Celine might be one of her bio brothers who's become a cop.

Actually, a break-in where the person is coming for information might be the best/quickest thing.
