May 10, 2019
Aurora had been having the panic attacks a little more often lately, though she still hadn't had time to tell Uncle Theo and Aunt Celine. Ridiculous homework loads- because it is May. The teachers are now trying to shove a boatload of information down the students' throats now before the end of the year- and late hours awake due to said homework loads, make her not really want to think about a possible hospital stay right now. School is still important, though Lucian is still her only true friend just now. Her body caught up to her brain too late for her to make a lot of friends this year, or so she thinks. Now- maybe in part because her possible need for a hospital was seemingly overwhelmed by the real need to keep up with her schoolwork- she'd had another one earlier today. She thought Lucian was getting a little better at helping her manage those already, though something still seemed off. If Lawrie had panic attacks too, she wonders why Lucian would be so stumped at all besides being a kid.
But she kind of...isn't a kid, really. Was she ever, after her mom died? She and Lucian have both lost mothers, but only she- as far as she knows, even in the whole town- had lost her mother to murder.
And Celine herself knows something is up. Aurora has that feeling, Aunt Celine always knew when something was bothering her, even more than the others. They have been closer, maybe, than any other aunt and niece normally are, since the funeral of her mother, and Uncle Theo probably senses it, too.
She'd been at school for the last one. It hadn't been too bad, but the fact that it has been before, and recently at that, scares her out of her wits. It was at lunch, during their outside time, though, so it was much less likely for someone other than Lucian to notice. Phew! At least it isn't her birthday yet. Maybe, for once, she won't have one then. But it is Uncle Joaquin's and she feels bad that she might have to miss a party, especially now that Aunt Sam- she still calls her that even though she and Joaquin aren't technically married anymore because she'd disappeared for a while like Brenna- is back in town. At least the church might be closed for that, briefly, though, since they are probably going to the party later.
But, even though Aurora wants Lawrie and Lucian with her to explain in part how bad the one at their house had been, she knows it is time now. And it's a Friday, and a rare one, with no homework, so nothing else to worry about there. Everyone else other than Uncle Kai has a job that really isn't closed for emergencies, and he is pretty much always at the employment office, looking. As soon as she gets home from school, she makes a call to Uncle Theo's cell, feeling a little desperate, although it's not affecting her breathing, at least yet. She decides to head over there just in case it does, though, whether anyone is home or not; she's that frightened.
"Uncle Theo, I had another panic attack today. It was at school this time. I had to warn someone else.. 'cause Uncle Jeremiah was absent (OOC: whoa, Jeremiah is 13! Aren't he and Toby the same age? They were ring bearers in the wedding!) .and they're getting worse! Are you two home right now? I might have to go to the hospital. Lucian could maybe watch Finn and Verity?" Belatedly, she realizes that in case Aunt Celine ever forgets her cell, his cell might be turned on speaker so she can use it. All of them are. It helps when she can't always get to it right away, or it'a not near her wheelchair basket at all, or she drops it.And since the miscarriages, Aunt Celine has learned to fear hospitals particularly intensely. The birthing center in Neighboring City she goes to now is different, more homelike, a few less doctors and nurses so no one dies of claustrophobia while also literally experiencing breathtaking pain, and somewhat quieter to calm laboring mothers, but hospitals...
"Oops. No time to be embarrassed though. And I had the worst one I've ever had the day I met Lucian! All I was doing was trying to warn him, but...my body just sort of... gave up and told my brain what it already knew but I didn't have the words to say. About having friends. Then we both confessed we kind of...you know... like like each other, and oh God...I'm an idiot...when I think of what I said to tell him I couldn't stop it alone this once... but it's also why he didn't leave me alone then, too. He's the only one who thinks the ghost supposedly following me doesn't exist. What do I do? Do you and Aunt Celine have a story like that? Embarrasing on her part, anyway? I think she told Mom, well. something, but... not me. of course." She sighs. "I was so young when... maybe if I hadn't been, I would know it, and could have saved myself...something? I don't know."

When school ended and he said his goodbyes to Aurora for the day, Lucian watches with a somewhat heavy heart as they left in opposite directions. Ever since that fateful day on his couch, he's been painfully aware of how... well, for lack of a better word... off Aurora has seemed and felt. Every time she slips into another panic attack, Lucian's heart goes out to her even as he tries to help. He recalls how Lawrie helped her and how he himself has helped Lawrie, but somehow between his brain and his mouth, his words always seem to get messed up. He'll stumble over the words or say the wrong thing. The worst part is forcing himself to keep his hands at his side. He's seen how reaching out can result in pain for him. (Lawrie may have slapped him once or twice before Lucian learned his lesson.)
As he started to walk home, leaving Lindsey to fend for herself (a feat he knows she is more than capable of), all Lucian thought about was Aurora. The tense goodbye she had tossed him as she left. The lingering sense that she wasn't okay. He knows he did everything in his power today to help her, and as far as he knows, this time he actually managed to help instead of hinder. And even though he specifically asked, "Aurora, are you gonna be okay?" just before they parted ways, all he can think of is the look in her eyes as she told him goodbye instead.
Halfway home, Lucian stops in his tracks. He can't just leave her like that. Not after today. Not after what she's confessed to him. But... Will she want him there?
Lucian doesn't care. Allowing himself to care impulsively about this girl, he turns around and heads back in the direction he came. He isn't sure why she should be any different than the handful of other girls he's had a crush on but... maybe it's because she was so honest that day they met. He feels a strange sort of responsibility and an even stranger connection. Like he understands her almost better than he understands himself. At least with her, he doesn't have to decipher his own entangled thoughts. With her, all he needs to know and understand sits right in front of him in human form.
As the stoplight turns green and he stops at the corner, watching the cars zoom past, Lucian begins to doubt his choice. Why would she want him there? They just met! They don't have anything special. They're just kids! He glances down the streets and back the way he came, rocking nervously on his heels as he waits for the walk sign to turn on. Just as it does, he turns and heads back home.
"Lucian, where were you going?" Lawrie asks as he watches his brother ditch his plan.
Lucian looks up from the street, for the first time really taking in his surroundings. "Lawrie! I-" He bites his lip amd then slowly releases a breath. "Aurora had another... at school today. And I- I dunno. I guess I was worried about her. She's probably busy and doesn't want to see me anyway."
As he passes his brother, Lucian brushes against Lawrence enough to allow the older boy to grab his arm. "Lu, listen to your instincts. I'll go with you if you want." Lucian stares into his brother's eyes for just a moment before nodding.
"It's this way," he mumbles, heading back to the intersection.
Before they even get to Aurora's street however, Lucian spots her across the street, clearly engrossed in a conversation on her phone. Lawrie notices as Lucian begins to slow down, sensing the younger boy plans to ditch again. With a slight shake of his head, Lawrie waves to Aurora when she looks towards them.

(OOC: Rare shorter one, but I feel like I have to say something so they know she wants them. Also, not sure if the lip reading should be in quotes or italics atm, so I'm leaving it alone and adding a colon.)
Aurora sees them, and although the phone still has to be held to her ear, she gives them both a weak smile. After a minute, she takes a chance and hopes they're good lip readers: Possibly hospital. My uncle will take me, maybe, so didn't go home. Will you guys explain?

(OOC: Honestly, I still prefer your version of a shorter post. 😂)
As they cross the street to meet Aurora, both boys notice her lips moving. Lucian catches one word-- "hospital" --and gulps. He knew it. He knew something felt off about their goodbye. Jogging to close the distance, Lucian stops as he hops the curb. He reaches out to place a hand on her shoulder before thinking twice. "You okay?" he whispers.

She has to whisper too, because she's waiting for her Uncle Theo. "I think so, just... these are scaring me. And they've gotten worse. That's like, what, I think 2 in one week? Geesh! But if you guys explain, Uncle Theo and Aunt Celine might get how bad it is enough to take me. Even if they might have to briefly say the church is closed for an emergency."

Lucian nods, sliding his thumb nervously along his backpack strap. "Yeah, umm, yeah, I- we- we can help with that," he stammers, longing to reach out to her but not yet daring.
"Sounds like Lu's gonna be more equipped for that," Lawrie says. "He told me about earlier. Is this because of that?"

"Sort of... but it's also because I was like three quarters gone and made a mess of myself when I met him. And they have a similar story, I think- I've never heard about it, but- just in case he thinks he's made an idiot of himself too, for not helping me? Though the fact that he tried to get a bag and couldn't and brought you means more than anything,,, I didn't expect we'd confess that we liked each other on the first day, though. I just wanted to know why neither of you ran when you could have." She smiles, even if she's still nervous about maybe getting tested for asthma.

"You'll be fine," Lawrie says with an encouraging smile. "You've got a great support system--"
"Which includes us," Lucian pipes in, yet again resisting the urge to comfort her with a touch. They've only known each other a short time and--
"Yeah. It definitely includes us," Lawrie continues. "Do your family- do they understand panic attacks? How they make you feel, what they can do to help, that sort of thing?"
Lawrie clearly remembers the first time he had one. At the time, no one in his immediate family knew what to do. He remembers Langdon and Emily researching it on their phones and vaguely overhearing his dad call his Uncle Brian to get advice. He was pretty young at the time. Younger than Aurora and Lucian are.
Lawrie shakes his head slightly to clear his thoughts, adding, "I know it can be scary when they don't."

"Safe bet? No" She is continuing to whisper. "Most of mine just kind of freeze. Shut down, you know? Which is just as awful, but at least you're not in danger in a safe place unless you forget to drink something. Not being able to breathe though? Minor major emergency. But they're not stupid, nor would I say they'd think it was, you know... not a very big deal. It is. And Aunt Celine will have her psychology degree in two years and that's only because she's pregnant and needs rest more than an office in BG or Neighboring City. Anyway... no. They don't. And despite herself, because they likely don't, yet, Aurora reaches for Lucian's hand."

For a moment that feels like a lifetime, Lucian stares down at her hand. It's the invitation to comfort her the way he's longed to since the first time she broke down in front of him. And yet the invitation, despite being given him willingly, causes him to hesitate. It came out of the blue... But Lucian takes her hand anyway. Comforted in the fact that she made the first step, he gives it a little sqieeze, willing all his comfort and sympathy to rush between them in that simple gesture.
"They haven't even... tried... to look it up and understand it better?" Lawrie asks, a little confused and taken aback. What kind of family... "It takes two seconds to Google it to give you breathing exercises."

"Aunt Celine would- she's studying psychology like I said. But like- Grandma and Grandpa? Not so much. Also... for years and years... I was... not convinced I imagined it, exactly, but I thought since they weren't that bad...yet...till now..." she sighs. "What was I afraid of? I don't even know myself. The psych ward for a month?"

Lawrie hums a little understanding in response. "Yeah... Psych wards. They do not have a good rep, huh?" he mumbles with a nervous chuckle. He thinks back on the number of times he himself has spent time in a psych ward. A mix of experiences, some good, some bad, but mostly a lot of in between. "I know it sucks sometimes, but, umm, I'm like... ninety percent certain that it saved my life. If I hadn't spent time there... a lot wouldn't have happened or come to light. So they definitely have their pros."

Aurora sees her uncle's truck in front of the church and motions to Lawrie and Lucian to follow. She has just hung up with her uncle.
"He's on his way. Just follow us. I hope Finn and Verity aren't scared when they see me. Do I look like death warmed over?" She's serious.

Lucian takes her hand, giving it a quick comforting squeeze. "You look fine," he assures her.
"Besides, if you're going to the emergency room," Lawrie adds, "it might help you get in faster to look... not quite one hundred percent okay."

Theo sees Aurora approaching with two friends. He wasn't expecting a group. He is a little relieved when Aurora gets in alone. Theo waves at the boys.

(OOC: This wasn't how I planned the thread at all but I guess I should have specified. Aurora can aske Celine and Theo later about their meeting story. We could always do something like saying, "A few hours later...")
"Call you later," Aurora mouths to Lucian and Lawrie. "I'll let you know what we find out." Then she gets into the truck.
