"I love looking at needlepoint, but don't have quite the coordination for it," Tarah admits. "I prefer yarn work, like these. They were used in several cultures as luck and long life amulets, including some Native American ones and in the Middle Ages." Above Tarah's head is a framed wall-hanging with a god's-eye inside. happyhooligans.ca/gods-eye-craft-weaving-for-kids/(OOC: I remember being at someone's birthday party in 4th grade and my mom teaching my friends how to make them.)

"Anise has great coordination. I don't think I have any pictures of her stuff and she hasn't done much recently what with, like, the move and settling into our new family and stuff, but maybe sometime I can show you some of her work. She's done stuff for me, too. Like, she sewed this cute little thing for my bedroom door. And a pillowcase."

"That's neat. The pillowcase must have taken ages!" Tarah comments. "What are some of your hobbies besides dance?"

"Be- besides dance?" Callie stammers. "I mean... I- I dunno. Dance is kinda-- it's kinda my life, really. I guess I- I like other creative things. But I'm not as good at any of those. I don't- I don't really so too much outside of dance and school."

Tarah smiles. "Yeah, that was kinda me and pottery or ceramics classes. But you don't think you'd maybe like to take art as an elective?" she asks. "I mean...I could maybe teach you a thing or two. If you'd like that."
Naamah sees that Tarah is trying to be friendly despite perhaps suspecting at least an attraction between the two girls. She smiles softly and nods as if to thank her.

Callie glances at Naamah, giggling sheepishly. "It wouldn't be weird to you to be teaching your sister-in-law's friend?" she asks. She bites her tongue to keep herself from calling herself anything more than Naamah's friend. Not even best friend.

Tarah considers this. "Of course not. I know lots of people who give art lessons, though I'm not one of the ones who does it for money. Though..." she smiles to herself. "Maybe I should. But I definitely wouldn't let my sister-in-law's friend pay."

"You're too nice!" Callie giggles, glancing at Naamah. She allows her gaze to linger for but a second, not wanting to give Tarah any more reason to suspect a stronger connection than mere friendship. "It might be kinda fun."

"Yeah, and we'd have a skill to show off to the other kids," Naamah adds. "What do you say? Let's do it."

Callie giggles and nods. "Sure! I'm in!" Though to be honest, her reasoning has less to do with wanting to learn a new art form and much more to do with the prospect of spending even more time eith Naamah.

"Can't wait!" Naamah agrees. She turns to Tarah. "What do you say, first lesson after we get back from NYC?"
"Sure. When would be convenient for you or your dad, Callie?"

"Ummm, well, I can honestly probably walk here. It's close enough. And my dad works a lot. He's a nurse. So I guess, whenever, really?" Callie responds.

"How about Friday, that way you can take a break from homework?" asks Tarah.

Callie nods. "That sounds perfect!" she exclaims. "I bet it'll be a lotta fun too. Eliza will be proud! That's my older sister. She's a big artiat too."

"Really? What does she do?" Tarah finds herself all ears as Callie talks about her artsy family. Naamah is smiling softly to herself. Maybe...eventually...it will be all right. If it even works out between them at all, let alone for long enough to tell anyone, Naamah would feel blessed.

"She's mostly drawing or painting," Callie says. "She's actually studying psychology in school though. She wants to work with kids. Do art therapy. She's really good. It kinda makes me sad, though, that she's not wanting to do the art professionally. She's good enough to for sure!"

"Maybe she could do it on the side. On the weekends," Tarah suggests. "Surely there's an art studio around here somewhere that would be glad to have her work. Do you know where she plans to live after she finishes school?"

"She wants to come back here, I think," Callie replies. "Set up her own practice. She says that this town helped her in her recovery process, I think. Don't know how or entirely why, but..." She shrugs. "But I know she wants to help people The way people helped her."

"Sometimes I don't always know how to do that," admits Naamah. "It can be tough when the ones who help you are family because they insist that you don't have to repay them sometimes." She gives Tarah a wink.

Callie smiles down at her now empty plate. "Yeah. It's nice to have family who can help. Eliza's my dad's only bio kid until recently, and she's been really nice to me and Anise. She gets it a little bit. It's nice to have someone around with a similar life experience, you know?"

Naamah nods. "It is. But it also makes paying it forward rather difficult, even when you feel you should." She sighs and smiles. "But I'm not sure how I'd begin to anyway. I guess...be there for someone whose life also sucks."

"Betcha Eliza would have some good ideas on that one," Callie encourages. "It's kinda of basically her whole life's work, is paying it forward. It's what got her where she is now. And trust me, she's in a great place!"

"Really? I'll have to talk to her." Naamah smiles, but she's curious. "How did that get her into psychology?"
|

|
Post by starletinwaiting on Sept 1, 2019 18:19:42 GMT -8
"It's kinda personal... But basically she went through some really tough stuff in high school, and she ended up volunteering with this place that had helped her through it and she just kinda... fell in love with the work they did, I guess," Callie replies.

"Wow." Naamah shakes her head. "I can't imagine going through any more crap than I am now, but to volunteer at the place that helped you after having been there yourself seems really brave, I bet she'll be a great psychologist. I'm not sure what I want to do yet. It will probably be something involving animals. Maybe a pet groomer or something."

"You mean You don't wanna do dance professionally?" Callie asks, taken aback. "I mean... I know I want to and you're just as good if not better than me so I guess I thought that maybe you wouls too."

"Oh I do- I just mean, I need a fallback plan for if I get injured or something and have to retire. I mean, I don't follow sports, but Menashe tells me a few of the football players say that's why they went to college in the first place- for a fallback plan- while also getting scholarships to play ball."
