Menashe nods. "Me too, actually. And Sheva was afraid she might because of the burn scars," he adds. "We're survivors." He smiles sympathetically.

"It sucks, huh?" Callie says, an instant bond formed with Naamah's brother. "It was okay when Anise could be there, because she always knew how to get them to stop. Even if that meant punching them. But it happened in class too and I... I felt helpless, you know?" Callie starts poking at her food, her appetite momentarily disappeared due to the subject.

Menashe nods. "In class really sucks, because kids know how to do it now without anybody noticing. It's enough to make me almost hate technology!" He has been bullied through text message before while using his phone to look up stuff for projects.

"Ugh. That kind is the worst. Because they can, like, delete it and stuff and then deny it so it looks like we're faking it or something. Which is so dumb, if you ask me. Why would anybody fake being bullied?" Callie sighs.

"Yeah but even then, you'd think there would be some kind of log about who you've texted. Or that someone might take a video."

"Yeah, there'd be a log on, like, their phone record, but it's not exactly like a school is gonna go that far with their investigation," Callie comments. "And nobody's honna take a video if the bullying happens solely over technology. The only time people do that is when it gets really out of control. My sister's gotten filmed once or twice when she stood up for me."

"Man, that must have been bad then!" Menashe says. "I mean...wow. Still, when it gets out of control, that means no one can say it didn't happen. Which is both good and bad. Good because you can't deny it, and bad because this stuff should be solved sooner."

"Oh, it so totally sucked." Callie laughs nervously. "It drew more attention to things and, like... Anise just kept stepping in. Which I appreciated and all. But... it was hard enough being me without also being the girl whose sister would beat people up."

"You'd think that would have kept people away, actually," comments Jesse with a laugh. "In my grandparents' day, probably. Maybe even in mine."

"Well, I meant more people knew who I was," Callie clarifies. "And sure. That meant that people would be more wary, but the harder to detect bullying got more common, you know? Because, like, my sister being someone likely to beat others up just gave 'em something more to pick at. Things like saying it was in my DNA. That it was only a matter of time till I star, ted being violent like her. You know?"

"Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry," says Naamah. "That had to have sucked. Were things better at school this year?"

Callie shrugs, picking shyly at her food. "It was- it was okay. If I'm being honest, I don't think I'll ever really be free from it, you know? Just because I am who I am. It gives people a lot to tear apart."

"Yeah...I think I get it." Naamah will probably ask Callie later, but she wonders if she's had some of the same experiences Naamah envisions herself having soon- particularly when it comes to religious matters and their sexual orientation.
"People are a lot nicer here, though, Sheva's right about that. I don't think they'll be all...in your face, you know?" Who knows? There may even be a few of their classmates trying to work similar things out in their own lives.

"Yeah, thankfully my dad's switching us to the schools here, instead of leaving us at the schools in Neighboring City," Callie sighs. It means having a friend she knows she can count on being nearby, thankfully. "We'll have to see if we can get similar schedules maybe."

"Most definitely. What electives would you like to take? I think they give you two. Then we could at least have one or both of those together."

"Definitely something artsy!" Callie giggles. "Like drama or choir or something. I'm not, like, an artist artist though, so please don't expect me to take, I dunno, drawing or painting or pottery or... whatever."

"No, don't worry, Sheva's the artist, not me!" Naamah grins. "Drama or choir would be cool, though. What foreign language?"

"Ooh. That's true... I mean... I feel like everyone takes Spanish. I'm more interested in, like, I dunno, French. You?"

"Yeah, me too. I actually have heard there used to be someone who taught Swahili, too. but I'm not sure he's still around."

"Whoa! That's different. I wonder how many parents would actually let their kid take something like Swahili though. You know, because 'Spanish is more useful' or whatever," Callie replies with a shake of her head.

"I know, right? It seemed to be a pretty popular class, though. Some of the younger adults- in their 20s and 30s mostly- remember it."

"I'm surprised their parents agreed!" Callie laufhs. "I mean... I know my dad would, but thats mostly because he's cool like that."

"I am too, but then again maybe not. Learning stuff that could be complicated- like a language a lot of people where you live don't know how to speak- can help you with persistence, I guess, in learning other things that might be difficult. Like, I don't know...calculus!"

Callie wrinkles her nose. "Calculus. Yuck. I'd much rather stick with the language no one else knows!" she laughs. "We'll for sure have to see what languages are bring offered though. Because, I mean... If Spanish is all they've got, I guess we'd be stuck with Spanish."

Nodding in agreement, Callie tries to hide her blush by taking a long swig from her glass of water. "Yeah. You mean other than dance, though, obviously. What kinda thing are you thinking?"

"Maybe...I dunno... archery? Pottery? Cooking? Instrument lessons?"
Tarah smiles. "Actually, I do some pottery myself."

"I do. Once I even made a teapot, which was a little more challenging, but really neat." She points to the hutch on the right side of the kitchen.

"Whoa! That's really cool!" Callie exclaims. "It sounds like the kinda thing my older sister would be interested in. Anise is, like, that weird mix of progressive in, like, her beliefs and stuff but conventional when it comes to her interests. She's pretty into Renaissance faires and stuff like that. She has a whole wall of, like, needlepoint creations she's done."
