"Two weeks sounds great to me. We could do a potluck at the park," Amos suggests. "Everyone can bring all of their kids and their favorite dish to share. The younger ones can bond while us adults get all caught up."

"that sounds perfect:" Tanya says.
Matt agrees.

"That would be great! I'll call Graciela and Aislara and Jeremiah so everyone can meet them, too."

Amos shares a knowing look with Tanya. "I bet a few of my kids will be happy to see Graciela again."

Carmen laughs. "Graciela and Jeremy have been joined at the hip- or are getting there, rather. She told me about the first conversation between them. She's so shy, always was, but especially since college, really. It's good to see her coming out of her shell with Eliza and Jeremy."

"With Jeremy too. He was so holed up after last year and that awful breakup, that seeing him out with other people, especially people who aren't his siblings, is almost on the level of a miracle. I'm glad they seem to have a similar effect on each other," Amos comments.

"it will be good to see who has gotten him back to his old self. Make bets on relationships and what?" Tanya says
"do I want to know what relationship?" Matt asks his mom and step dad.

"Oh, it was Jeremy's younger brother. That kid has a tendency to keep things like that incredibly personal. He tells no one. And with him being bisexual... Jeremy decided to make a bet on if his brother was in a relationship with a guy or a girl," Amos explains with a shake of his head. "Once you get to know Jeremy, you'll understand how in character that is for him."

Carmen covers her mouth to stifle her giggles, half shocked and half amused. "Well, when someone likes both, what can you do?"

"I made them limit their bets to a dollar, so there's no real harm done," Amos adds, chuckling. "I think Jeremy was a tad bit disappointed, though, to be honest. That kid cracks me up. He is a hoot."

"He might be just the thing to get Chela to lighten up a little. The poor thing is so serious- not only with her career choice- though I think one has to be- but also with the pain of her past experiences. Not that she's morose all the time, but since college, she's changed. It's like all of the bad stuff was taken to a level she didn't quite expect. I saw that video of her and Eliza and Fred the Jerk. Did you guys, too?"

"It's a little hard to miss something like that when your daughter shares it with you proudly," Amos replies. "Well... proudly seems like the wrong word. I doubt she would have let on about this to anyone else, but Eliza called me after it happened and she was almost in tears. Not only because it was her friend in need but because similar things have happened to her for all of her life. It's not something you can just get over."

"No, it's not," Carmen agrees. "And I think when you see someone else go through it it brings it back."

"Definitely," Amos says softly. "And the only reason Eliza said she was able to stand up for Graciela was because she'd been there and she knew what it felt like to be made powerless. When it's someone attacking you, it can be harder to stand up for yourself. That's how she described the situation to me."

"That's true. I'm glad Eliza was there, then. I thought Fred looking up 'misogynist' was pretty funny, though. You'd think someone in college would know words like that." Carmen giggles. "Seriously, though, it seems to have bonded them, and that's a good thing. Being away from your family- if you have a good one- is hard enough with friends, never mind without them."

"Yeah, they definitely have formed a bond. Funny how things like that create those unexpected relationships," Amos replies with a smile.

"It sure is. I've got some good work colleagues now, but other than them and Matt's family, I don't really get out much. I love what I do, but sometimes I wish I had a friend like those two seem to be to each other," Carmen admits.

"That kind of friendship seems rare," Amos admits. "You don't find that kind of connection in just anyone."

"That's true. Everyone deserves at least one good one, but few people find their person. Unless, that is, some of them get married." Carmen winks at Matt.

"It's definitely a challenge," Amos says with a smile. "One that sonetimes not even marriage fixes. I can tell you that my ex wife and I most certainly did not have that kind of relationship. There's a reason Eliza was my only biological kid until recently."
|
|
|

"Oh really? How recently? I think Eliza may have said she had a little sister, but I forget how old she said she was." Carmen smiles.

"The last couple years," Amos says. "So there's a pretty big age gap between Eliza and her. About twenty years. Which some people think is crazy. I've been out with them both and people assume that I'm out with my daughter and my granddaughter. Which, fair enough, I am definitely old enough to have grandchildren at this time."

Carmen sighs. This is an issue for so many people she knows. "I know what you mean- on both levels. People should never assume anything, but they do." She could get into a whole spiel about that, but she won't for now. "It seems like you and Tanya are happy, though. She was single, or rather divorced, when Matt and I met. I couldn't be happier."

"We've found our own little ways to keep connected," Amos chuckles, smiling at Tanya. "We spent a lot on postage. And it's a good thing phone plans are all as good as they are now too."

"Oh, the kids love Marco Polo!" Amos laughs. "I would come off a shift at work and have about a million little videos from them."
